Fabric Manipulation
What you will learn:
This course explores the creative process of fabric manipulation, offering students an in-depth experience in the art of crafting three-dimensional textile sculptures. Participants will learn and practice detailed techniques such as smocking, pleating, and gathering, moving from traditional approaches to modern innovations. With a focus on design principles, fabric selection, and the integration of classic and contemporary methods, the course guides students through hands-on demonstrations and personal projects. By the end, students will have developed the skills to transform fabric into dynamic, visually striking sculptures. Join us to become proficient in the art of textile sculpting.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Master smocking, pleating, and gathering techniques, showcasing your ability to manipulate fabric with precision to create multidimensional textile sculptures.
- Explore and understand a variety of textiles and materials, grasping their unique properties and how they interact with smocking, pleating, and gathering to produce diverse textures, forms, and volumes.
- Integrate traditional textile sculpting methods with modern innovations, developing a comprehensive understanding of both historical practices and contemporary approaches in the field.
- Apply the techniques you've learned to execute individual textile sculpture projects that demonstrate a blend of creativity and technical expertise.
What you will need to bring along:
- Fabric and calico
- Fabric and paper scissors
- Sharp trimming scissors
- Dressmaker’s pins
- Tape measure
- Tailors chalk
- Dressmaker’s tracing wheel
- Tracing paper
- A selection of hand sewing needles and threads
- Notepad and pens, pencils, sharpener and an eraser
Time and Duration:
- Thursday’s @ 10:30 - 14:00 (6 weeks - once a week)

Note:
- Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students
- You are generally expected to spend some time outside of class for the completion of the activities, hence it is advisable to have a sewing machine at home
